If you use the star just for enchanting, then yes it can feel like a waste of time, especially since grand soul gems are plentiful enough. Now you can use the filled soul gem to recharge your magic items and enchant weapons and armour. Since Azura's Star is reusable, I'd prefer it if it always filled the star first.
